Prathiba's Success
Prathiba patil:Indian's first woman president.I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw the news.Being an Indian and a woman it is the day to celebrate.I read in the paper that diwali is celebrated in advance(in some parts of country).Far before the womens rule in western countries we had our first prime minister:Indira Gandhi.
Today Indian Air force and Army has women,nearly 50% of IT people include females,15-20% of doctors,scientists like Shakuntala Devi,business people like Sudha murthy etc,etc.,This is only one side of the coin.The other side of coin has traumatic statistics.Ratio of women to men is decreasing.-In 1960 the ratio is 976/1000 and in 2001 it is 927/1000.
-Every sixth child dies due to gender discrimination.
-1/3 of the deaths are in mother's womb(the safest place in earth).
-1 out of 4 girls are sexually abused before age of 4.
In many parts of India(not only among illiterates but also among some educated families)girls are not considered to be equal with boys.They seems like a burden to parents and they feel relieved after their marraige.Yes the main reason behind this is dowry.This is the worst system still prevailing in INDIA.Women with highest degrees are also not getting married without this DOWRY.They say Education lightens the life.But males who are in their distinguished position demand more during marraige(though bride is also in equal position).It means education is not lightening but blowing of the existing light.
After the Prathiba Patil's success we must not think we have scaled the heights of achievement,we have a far more way to go to reach the destination.
